Journal of Language Education and Literacy (JLEL) is committed to maintaining clear, accurate, and transparent information regarding the copyright and licensing terms applicable to its published scholarly content.

JLEL has used Creative Commons licensing to support open access and the responsible sharing and reuse of published scholarly work. The journal's licensing information has been clarified over time to ensure that the terms applicable to published articles are clearly identified.

Licensing Before August 2023

Articles published by JLEL before August 2023 were made available under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike (CC BY-NC-SA) license.

The journal's earlier publication template identified published articles as open-access articles under the CC BY-NC-SA license. However, the version number of the license was not explicitly stated in the licensing notice.

Accordingly, JLEL does not retrospectively assign a Creative Commons license version to articles for which a specific version was not identified at the time of publication.

The licensing information displayed on the individual article and its published Version of Record remains the authoritative record of the license under which that article was originally published.

Licensing from August 2023

Beginning in August 2023, JLEL formally specified the version of its Creative Commons license and adopted the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0) for newly published articles.

Under the CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license, users are permitted to:

  • Share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format; and

  • Adapt — remix, transform, and build upon the material.

These permissions are subject to the following conditions:

  • Attribution (BY) — Appropriate credit must be given to the original author(s), a link to the license must be provided, and any changes made must be indicated;

  • NonCommercial (NC) — The material may not be used for commercial purposes;

  • ShareAlike (SA) — If the material is remixed, transformed, or built upon, the resulting material must be distributed under the same license as the original; and

  • No Additional Restrictions — Users may not apply legal terms or technological measures that legally restrict others from exercising the rights granted by the license.

Applicability of the Licensing Policy

The license applicable to an individual article is determined by the licensing terms under which that article was originally published.

Accordingly:

  • Articles published before August 2023 remain subject to the CC BY-NC-SA licensing terms identified on their individual article pages or published Versions of Record. Where no Creative Commons version number was originally specified, JLEL does not retrospectively assign one; and

  • Articles published from August 2023 onward are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0).

The adoption of CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 does not retroactively replace or modify the licensing terms under which previously published articles were originally made available.

Copyright

Authors retain copyright in their published articles and grant the Journal of Language Education and Literacy (JLEL) the right of first publication in accordance with the journal's Copyright and Licensing Policy.

The clarification or development of the journal's licensing policy does not alter the copyright ownership of previously published articles.

Third-Party Material

The Creative Commons license applicable to an article does not automatically apply to third-party material where separate copyright or licensing terms are expressly indicated.

Images, figures, tables, datasets, photographs, illustrations, or other third-party materials may therefore be subject to separate copyright or licensing conditions. Users should consult the relevant credit line or copyright notice before reusing such material.

JLEL has explicitly applied CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 to newly published articles since August 2023.
